Part of David Lynch: A Retrospective and Music City Mondays
In one of the most twisted romances of all time, young lovers Sailor (Nicolas Cage) — fresh off a self-defensive manslaughter wrap — and Lula (Laura Dern) set out on a parole-breaking, post-incarceration road trip to sunny California. They’re met along the way by a bizarre array of characters all dead-set on killing Sailor and gathering the reward for a hit put out by Lula’s hysterical mother. Tinged throughout with equal parts WIZARD OF OZ and Elvis, this surreal neo-noir becomes a sort of dark fairytale about the power of true love — and the slimeballs and creeps you meet along the way.
